Are Amsterdam coffeeshops still worth visiting?

I've been bouncing between Amsterdam and Haarlem lately and wondered out loud — are the coffeeshops in Amsterdam still worth the hype, or is Haarlem the better chill option now? Last weekend I popped into a few spots around the centre (not going to name names here) and noticed prices a bit higher, more tourists, and queues. Haarlem felt calmer, friendlier staff, easier to find something relaxed. I know every place is different, just curious what people who live nearby think — especially anyone who's compared De Haag/Haarlem/Amsterdam weekends.

I live in Alkmaar and I go to Amsterdam maybe once a month. If you're after variety and new things, Amsterdam wins hands down — there are always a few shops rotating stock. But for a relaxed afternoon with less hassle, Haarlem or Alkmaar are nicer. Depends what you want: spectacle or chill.

Ik ga liever naar Haarlem. Minder toeristen, praat makkelijker met personeel en je hebt vaak betere lokale cafés en winkels eromheen. Amsterdam is leuk voor één dag maar niet voor de rust.

Totally agree with the Haarlem point. For visitors who want a bit more space and less of a queue, Haarlem is consistently easier. That said, Amsterdam still has some legendary spots — you just have to be picky and avoid the busiest streets.

Short answer: depends on the day. Weekend evenings in central Amsterdam are crowded; weekdays mornings are perfect. If you can, go during off-peak times and you'll appreciate the difference. Also, Haarlem has a nicer vibe for a proper sit-down.

As someone who commutes to Amsterdam for work: when friends visit I still take them there, because it's iconic. But my personal afternoons off? Haarlem, one hundred percent. More space, nicer terraces, easier to park if you drive.

I lived in Amsterdam for a year and I still think it's worth it for the history and the variety. But don't expect solitude there; you go for the scene. If you want a relaxed afternoon with friends, take the short train to Haarlem and you'll thank me.
