Are Amsterdam coffeeshops really better than Haarlem?

Okay, I'm new-ish and been reading a lot — quick take: Amsterdam has variety, sure, but it can be busy and prices are inflated in the centre. Haarlem (and some spots in Rotterdam/Haarlem outskirts) felt calmer, staff more chatty, and you actually get to see product without being rushed. My question to locals: is it worth spending the extra time in Amsterdam every visit, or try smaller cities more often? Mentioning Amsterdam because I stopped by a couple of places near the canals (not naming them) and it felt touristy.

I agree — Amsterdam is a spectacle, but if you want a relaxed chat with the budtender Haarlem or smaller towns win. Also depends on what you want: variety vs atmosphere.

Ik woon in de buurt van Haarlem — ja, hier is het rustiger en vaak goedkoper dan in het centrum van Amsterdam. Maar soms mis je juist de keuze. Hangt van je humeur af.

> @Leodegar: "is it worth spending the extra time in Amsterdam" — if it's your first time, yes, at least once. Afterwards pick small places unless you're hunting specific strains.

Istanbul? nope, but serious: smaller shops often know regulars and can recommend off-menu stuff. If you want a calm afternoon, skip central Amsterdam on weekends.

Als duitser: Amsterdam is uniquer als toerist, aber Haarlem ist angenehmer für regelmäßige Besuche. Nicht zu viel erwarten, einfach ausprobieren.

I found a tiny place in Amsterdam that was chill and not touristy — so it's hit-or-miss. If you like exploring, both cities are worth visiting.
