Utrecht or Amsterdam if I care about residency rules?

Thinking out loud: I'm considering moving and want to join somewhere after I settle. Amsterdam seems obvious (more places, more flexible?), but I've heard Utrecht enforces the ingezetenencriterium more strictly. I don't know yet if I'll be an official resident in time. For someone who values straightforward admin and not endless ID checks, would you pick Utrecht or Amsterdam? Also curious about Den Haag or Eindhoven as quieter alternatives — any legal/regulatory quirks I should be aware of?

Utrecht often asks for registration (inschrijving) but it's not impossible if you show you're in the process of moving. Amsterdam has more venues and many are used to tourists, but cities keep changing rules so always ask ahead.

Short: Amsterdam = more variety, Utrecht = more predictable if you're registered. If you plan to stay, register asap and you'll avoid most headaches.

Depends what you need. Amsterdam's scale hides a lot of local rules — one shop might be tourist-friendly, another strictly for residents. If you're moving, Utrecht or Den Haag feel calmer admin-wise.

If you want less hassle, pick a smaller city like Eindhoven or Den Haag suburbs. More personal relationships between staff and regulars = easier admin chats.

Thinking: register quickly, even with temporary address. That nails down residency questions and you'll be in a better position when joining. Amsterdam is great but if you're sensitive to paperwork, Utrecht or smaller cities can be kinder.
