Cannabis Social Clubs

A cannabis social club (CSC) is a private, non-profit members' association where adults collectively cultivate and share cannabis for personal use in a regulated, private environment. Members pay fees that fund collective cultivation — they are not buying cannabis retail. Access is restricted to registered members, consumption takes place on the premises only, and the club operates under applicable national law. CSCs are fundamentally different from retail dispensaries or public shops.

In the Netherlands, licensed coffee shops are regulated establishments where adults aged 18 and over can legally purchase and consume cannabis over the counter. This tolerance policy (gedoogbeleid) has been in place since the 1970s and is unique to the Netherlands. Unlike private member clubs in other countries, Dutch coffee shops are commercial businesses open to the public and do not require advance membership, though some cities restrict entry to local residents.

The main difference is membership and commercial structure. Cannabis social clubs in Spain, Germany, and Malta are private member associations — you cannot walk in off the street and typically need an introduction from an existing member or through a verified introduction service. Dutch coffee shops are open commercial businesses where any adult can purchase cannabis without prior membership. The legal frameworks are entirely different, reflecting each country's approach to regulation.

Access policies vary by country and club. In Spain and Germany, clubs are private associations and tourist access is subject to each club's own policies — however many clubs welcome international visitors, particularly those listed as tourist-friendly on Cannabivo. In the Netherlands, coffee shops are generally open to any adult 18+. Always bring a valid government-issued photo ID proving you are 18 or older — a passport, national ID card, or driver's licence is accepted at most venues. For CSCs, having your Cannabivo pass on your phone speeds up the check-in process. For Dutch coffee shops, ID is sufficient for entry. Check the specific venue's Cannabivo profile for any additional requirements.

Most CSCs enforce: members-only access, age verification (18+) at every visit, consumption on the premises only, no cannabis taken off the premises, no alcohol or harder substances on site, and respectful behaviour. In Germany, additional KCanG rules apply including quantity limits per visit. Specific rules vary by club and are listed on each club's Cannabivo profile where available.

Each person wishing to enter a cannabis social club must be an individual member or go through the club's own guest introduction process independently. You cannot bring non-members in as casual guests in most clubs — membership is personal and non-transferable. If you are visiting as a tourist, each person in your group needs their own prior introduction or valid membership. Group size limits may also apply at some venues.

If you feel unsafe or are treated badly, leave the venue. Do not escalate conflicts on the premises. Consumption rules vary by venue and by national law. Most cannabis social clubs permit smoking and the use of dry herb vaporisers on the premises. Some clubs accommodate concentrates or edibles; others do not. Combustion (smoking) is the most universally accepted method. Always check the specific club's rules before visiting — many venues display their house rules in their Cannabivo profile or at reception.

"Tourist-friendly" indicates that a club has confirmed it accepts introductions from visiting adults who are not local residents. Requirements still apply — valid ID, adherence to the club's own process, and compliance with national law — but the club actively accommodates short-term visitors rather than exclusively serving long-term local members. Tourist-friendly status is self-reported by clubs and verified where possible.
