Are Amsterdam coffeeshops actually better for tourists?

I’m new-ish to the Netherlands and keep hearing the line that Amsterdam coffeeshops are «the best» for tourists. I get that Amsterdam has more variety, but is it really that different from other cities? I’m thinking of a day trip and wondering if it’s worth the crowds or if smaller places give a friendlier vibe. Referencing Amsterdam shops in case someone wants to compare — I visited once near the centre and it was busy but okay, just curious about other takes.

Depends what you want. Amsterdam=more selection, more tourists. If you want quieter and chatty staff, smaller towns like Steenwijk or Leeuwarden have nicer spots.

I've lived here a while — Amsterdam is great for variety and late hours, but it's also pricier and more hectic. For a relaxed experience pick a coffeeshop off the beaten path, bring ID, and avoid peak tourist times if possible. If you're prioritising atmosphere over selection, smaller towns can surprise you.

Ja, für manche schon. If you're easily stressed by crowds then Amsterdam might feel overwhelming. But if you like choice and late opening hours, it’s worth one visit — then consider exploring Den Haag or smaller cities for calmer spots.

I’d add: if you plan to try different places, note the opening hours and any local rules about tourists. Amsterdam has some neighbourhoods that are lovely early morning.
