Coffeeshop quality: Amsterdam really overrated?

Okay unpopular opinion: I think a lot of Amsterdam coffeeshops get hyped way too much. Went into the center last month (near the canals) and the strains felt inconsistent, prices high for what you get. Maybe I hit the tourist traps. In smaller towns I've found steadier stuff and friendlier vibes. Not saying avoid Amsterdam, but if you live here or have time, try a few places outside the centre (Maassluis, Venray came to mind from friends). Curious what others think — am I being picky?

Ja, precies zo. Centrum is vaak toeristisch en druk.

Depends what you want. Amsterdam has variety but also a lot of one-off batches. Smaller towns often have loyal regulars and shops that rotate less. If you want consistency, try asking staff about recent batches and when they were harvested — if they shrug, probably not the best stock.

Totally agree with the tourist thing — some shops rely on footfall and shift their selection for quick sales. But there are still hidden spots with consistent cultivars if you ask locals or check recent online chatter.

Long answer: Amsterdam is two things — the tourist belt and the neighbourhood scene. In the tourist areas we saw shops that rotate to chase trends; prices are marked up because people will pay for the 'experience'. Outside that zone you can still find coffeeshops run by people who know their growers and keep a stable menu. My partner moved from Amsterdam to Maassluis and swears the smaller shops have better handling (less drying out, fresher stock). Also, product naming is a mess — the same strain name across shops can be different genetics. So for consistency, find a local you trust and stick with them. If you're visiting, try to read a few reviews and avoid the canal-side shops unless you just want the spectacle.

Short version: depends on what you expect. Amsterdam good for variety, not always for consistent batches.
