Coffeeshop The Jolly Joker Cannabis Social Club in Amsterdam

The Jolly Joker is the sort of coffee shop people duck into between market stalls and canal walks. Sitting on the little square by Nieuwmarkt, it mixes the clack of bicycles, church bells and the chatter of outdoor markets. I've popped in more than once; inside is compact and sometimes rammed on weekend nights, with locals shoulder-to-shoulder with tourists. There's a no-frills, slightly old-school feel — wooden tables, casual chatter and a menu that keeps things straightforward. Staff are direct and honest; they'll tell you what's popular without fuss. If you want to sit outside, the square gives you views of canal bridges and a steady flow of people-watching. Around it you'll find Chinese restaurants, tiny bars and centuries-old facades, so the area's never quiet. Not for those after sterile minimalism — this is a lived-in spot where the city feels loud and close.
